Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
