Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
